In this unit, you will learn the names of basic art and design tools. You will also practice describing the objects on your creative desk using simple words.

Learn words to name and describe the tools you use for art and design.

  • Pencil: a tool for drawing or writing
  • Pen: a tool for writing
  • Brush: a tool for painting
  • Paper: material for drawing or writing
  • Computer: a device for digital design
  • Screen: the part of a computer or tablet you look at
  • Tablet: a digital drawing device
  • Paint: coloured liquid used for painting
  • Colour: the look of something (red, blue, etc.)
  • Use: to do something with a tool
  • Have: to own something
  • Want: to like to have something
  • Like: to enjoy something
  • Big: large
  • Small: little

Grammar

1. Have got (to own something)

We use have got to say we own or have something.

  • I have got a pencil.
  • She has got a computer.
  • We have got brushes and paint.

2. A / An (indefinite articles)

Use a before words starting with a consonant sound and an before words starting with a vowel sound.

  • a pencil, a brush, a computer
  • an eraser, an idea, an iPad

3. Can (ability)

Use can to talk about what you are able to do.

  • I can draw with a pencil.
  • She can use a tablet.
  • We can paint with colours.

Worked Examples

Example 1: I have got a brush. → Tôi có một cây cọ.

Example 2: She can use a computer. → Cô ấy có thể sử dụng máy tính.

Example 3: I want an eraser. → Tôi muốn một cục tẩy.

Practice Tip

Try to name your own creative tools in English. Use have got to say what you own, can to say what you can do, and a / an for new tools you want.
