In this unit, you will learn simple words to describe the people and places in your artwork. You will practice talking about colors, shapes, and where things are in your pictures.

Target Vocabulary

Here are the words you can use to talk about people and places in your pictures:

  • people – more than one person
  • child – a young person
  • family – parents, children, brothers, sisters
  • friend – a person you like
  • school – place where children learn
  • park – outdoor area with trees and grass
  • home – where you live
  • garden – a place with plants and flowers
  • day – the time when the sun is up
  • sun – the star in the sky that gives light
  • tree – a tall plant with a trunk and leaves
  • dog – a common pet animal
  • cat – another common pet animal
  • happy – feeling good or smiling
  • sad – feeling unhappy

Grammar: There is / There are

Use there is for one thing and there are for more than one thing.

  • There is a dog in the garden.
  • There are three children in the park.

Grammar: Adjectives for Description

Adjectives describe nouns. You can say:

  • The child is happy.
  • The tree is big.
  • The cat is small and sad.

Grammar: Present Simple for Description

Use the present simple to describe people or places in your pictures.

  • The family is in the park.
  • The sun shines on the garden.
  • The children play with their dog.

Worked Examples

Example 1:

Look at the picture. Write sentences using there is / there are and adjectives.
