Unit Goal

In this unit, you will learn five useful words:

  • hours
  • black
  • products
  • happened
  • whole

You can use these words to talk about time, colors, things in stores, past events, and complete things.

Vocabulary

Word Meaning Example
hours A measure of time. One day has 24 hours. I studied for two hours.
black A dark color. My bag is black.
products Things that people make and sell. The store sells many products.
happened Something took place in the past. What happened yesterday?
whole Complete; all of something. I ate the whole apple.

Language Focus: Talking About Time and Past Events

1. Using "hours"

We use hours to talk about time.

Pattern: Number + hours

  • three hours
  • five hours
  • ten hours

Example: We traveled for six hours.

2. Using "happened"

Happened is used when we talk about the past.

Question: What happened?

Answer: An accident happened.

Example: Something funny happened at school.

3. Using "whole"

Whole means complete or all of something.

  • the whole cake
  • the whole day
  • the whole class

Example: She read the whole book.

Worked Examples

Example 1

Sentence: I worked for four hours.

Meaning: The work lasted four hours of time.

Example 2

Sentence: The car is black.

Meaning: The color of the car is black.

Example 3

Meaning: We are asking about an event in the past.
