Can-do Goal

I can understand and use these words: short, better, best, however, and low.

I can use these words in simple sentences about people, things, and situations.

Target Vocabulary

Word Meaning Example
short Not long; small in length or height. The pencil is short.
better More good than something else. This book is better than that book.
best The most good. She is my best friend.
however But; used to show a different idea. I like soccer. However, I do not play it often.
low Not high. The table is low.

Word Families and Comparisons

good → better → best

These words help us compare people or things.

  • good = positive
  • better = more good than another thing
  • best = the most good in a group

Example:

Tom is good at soccer.

Ben is better than Tom.

Leo is the best player.

Using "However"

However shows a different or opposite idea.

Pattern:

Sentence 1. However, Sentence 2.

I like coffee. However, I do not drink it every day.

The weather is sunny. However, it is not warm.

Understanding "Short" and "Low"

Short

Use short for length, time, or height.

  • a short story
  • a short pencil
  • a short person

Low

Use low when something is not high.

  • a low chair
  • a low wall
  • low clouds

Worked Examples

Example 1

Sentence: This road is better than that road.

Why? We compare two roads. We use better.

Example 2

Sentence: Anna is the best singer in the class.

Why? We compare many students. We use best.

Example 3

Sentence: The tree is tall. However, the wall is low.

Why? However introduces a different idea.
