Unit Goal

In this unit, you will learn words about nature, groups of people, and actions in the past. You will also learn simple phrases about helping a river and growing plants.

Past Tense Words

Some verbs change in the past.

Present Past
take took
begin began

Examples:

  • I take a photo. → I took a photo.
  • The class begins. → The class began.

Questions with "Can"

Use Can + subject + verb to ask about ability or possibility.

Pattern:

Can + they + grow + ... ?

Examples:

  • Can they grow vegetables?
  • Can they grow flowers here?

Example 1

Sentence: We clean the river every year.

Meaning: We help remove trash from the river.

Example 2

Sentence: Four groups of students came to help.

Step: "Four groups of" means there are four different teams.

Example 3

Sentence: The child began to cry.

Step: "Began" means "started."

Meaning: The child started crying.
